Maths, English Pilot Project will produce required results in a few years : – Minister Manickchand

EDUCATION Minister, Ms. Priya Manickchand says confidently that after a few years the Mathematics and English Pilot Project will produce the kind of results the ministry is seeking. In a recent interview with the media, the Education Minister noted that the project which aims to increase the number of candidates securing passes in Mathematics and English Language at the secondary level is currently in place in 41 secondary schools across the country.
These schools, Manickchand  said, includes North Georgetown Secondary,  Richard Ishmael Secondary, Christ Church Secondary, Abram Zuil Secondary  and Anna Regina Multilateral.
After the release of last year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exam results, Manickchand had said that the project, which ran over the four-month period  January to May 2012 in 36 schools,  had facilitated a significant increase in grade 1 to 3 passes in 18 of those schools.
She had noted that the overall pass rate in the pilot schools were 39.85% in Mathematics and 52.05% in English Language.
Improved Performance
This, Manickchand pointed out, did not only represent an improved performance from the previous year, but also showed that the pass rate in these two subjects were above the national and regional average.
Some of the schools which saw a significant improvement were West Demerara Secondary (from 62.6% in 2011 to 80.53% in 2012), Berbice High School (from 12.8% in 2011 to 51.56% in 2012) and Christ Church Secondary (from 36.4% in 2011 to 61.91% in 2012).
The minister had indicated that the schools in which the project was implemented were not the top schools, but were the schools which were performing poorly.
The Guyana government ensured that each child had the relevant textbooks, calculators, geometry sets, graph paper, and study guides, as well as extra lessons and classes.
They also engaged the assistance of volunteers who aided in the supervision of how the programmes were working, such as ensuring that the syllabus was completed and extra classes were being held.
