BUSINESSMAN Lex Carpen, 48, of Little Abary, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, survived a daylight armed robbery in which he was shot and injured on Tuesday.
Two men, one armed with a handgun, attacked him as he sat in his parked mini-bus outside the High Court in downtown Georgetown.
Police reported that, about 11:00 hrs, while he was sitting in the vehicle at Charlotte Street and Avenue of The Republic, he was held up by a man armed with a firearm. The gunman took away $217,000 and escaped after shooting Carpen to his left knee.
The wounded man was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) and sent away.
Carpen said he had left a city bank and gone to a fuel station before going to where the attack took place.
Grateful that his life was spared, he said the robbers wasted no time in demanding the money he had, earlier, withdrawn from the bank.
He said he tried to draw his own licensed weapon but could not shoot at the men after he exited the mini-bus, BJJ 7888, because there were other people around.
The men grabbed the cash which was on the front seat of the bus and, as they fled, they discharged another round which hit a passerby, Cherlee Cosbert, 31, who was wounded on her left leg.
The woman was, at the time, going through the gate of the High Court compound. She, too, was treated at the GPH, where she and Carpen were conveyed by public-spirited citizens.
