Banks DIH/Linden ‘Guinness Greatest of the Streets’ : Four players hit double on final night of preliminary action : … Knockout stage kicks off on Saturday

FOUR players got double strikes for their respective teams when the curtain came down on the final night of preliminary action in this year’s Banks DIH-sponsored Linden ‘Guinness Greatest of the Streets’ Futsal football competition last Saturday at the Wisroc/Amelia’s Ward Bus Park. Jamal Samuels and Aubrey Fredericks found the back of the net twice for Cherokee Park, with Devon Greene and Quincy Davis doing the same for South Stars and Rough and Rugged respectively, warming the hearts of the fans who braved the showers to witness the night’s action.
Playing in the sixth night and having seen Fredericks open the scoring for Cherokee Park in the third minute of their fixture and the first of the night against Blueberry Hill, Samuels followed with the first of his two goals one minute after.
He (Samuels) added his second in the 12th minute to hand Cherokee Park a 3-0 advantage over their opponents. The score was later increased by one, following Fredericks’ second goal scored in the 15th minute, before Troy Miller responded with Blueberry Hill’s solitary goal in the 17th minute, as his team went down 4-1.
Green got his brace in the 6th and 8th minutes of his team South Stars’ engagement against Rough and Rugged, following which Davis responded for the opposition, scoring his double in the 9th and 15th minutes of play.
Goals from Kevin Croal (11th) and Marlon Cox (9th), ensured both teams played to a 3-3 draw, after seeing Aliki and Minibus Park play to a 1-1 draw, with Averill Johnson (4th)and John Waldron (15th) finding the back of the net for the respective teams in that order.
Thanks to goals from Melvin Benn (14th), Jermaine Grandison (18th) and Tony Adams (19th) minutes of play respectively, Star Boys were able to put away High Stars 3-0, to be the lone team to record a victory with a clean sheet during the night’s action.
Ateba Edmonson (12th) and Derwin Day (19th) were the men responsible for Coomacka United’s 2-1 victory over Constab, for whom Jermaine Fordyce gave a glimmer of hope with his 3rd minute goal, which was followed by Trainline Warriors and Eagles United 1-1 stalemate, with Lyndon Anderson (7th) and Keon Bristol (8th) being the men on target for both teams.
The knockout phase of the competition of which TLC Russians are the defending champions and which also has a $600 000 cash prize for the winners who will enter the national phase of the competition along with the runner-up team, will kick off this Saturday at the same venue. (Calvin Roberts)
