WATCHED by a small, yet vocal crowd, in the scorching midday heat, top seed Anthony Downes and second seed Jeremy Miller played a superb and fitting three-set final, to close the 2013 Assuria Invitational at the National Racquet Centre. Downes made a very strong start breaking a rusty-looking Miller who was down at 4-0 before clawing his way back to level the match 4-4 in the first set. He then inched ahead 5-4 before the match was on-serve.
Downes then lost his serve at a pivotal point in the twelfth game to lose the set 7-5.
The second set was an error-prone one for Miller. He was broken three times to lose the set 6-0 to set up the super tiebreak. In the super tiebreak, the person who reaches the tenth point first wins.
Miller staged a hard-fought comeback but was upstaged by a persistent Downes. Miller was two points from a defeat at 8-5 in the super tie-break third set, but he rallied to take 3 of the next 4 points to inch to 8-9.
Miller served to stay in the match at 8-9 but his weak backhand was under immense pressure from a strategic Downes. The top seed aimed for the lines at which point Miller could only apply the backhand slice which kept low but that was the downfall for Miller as he handed Downes the match.
That sealed Downes’ second consecutive tournament win, to go along with the Pegasus 2012 Open.
In other action, Carlos Adams stayed perfect to win the Men’s Over-35 Assuria Invitational title. This was assured after he defeated Godfrey Lowden in straight sets. He was impressed with the way he performed, noting that it is the first tournament for the year and that he won his matches quite comfortably.
In the Women’s group, Guyana’s top female Carol Humphrey battled to take the crown with an impressive 2-0 record. She was followed by Shawna Gentle with a 1-1 record in the runner-up position.
President of the GTA, Ramesh Seebarran, said that he was impressed with the way the tournament was run, also mentioning that it depended on sponsors, and with that he thanked Assuria for supporting the association.
Seebarran pleaded with players to be punctual when playing tournaments, noting that players were late for scheduled matches without any prior notification.
Assuria confirmed that this tournament would be a regular feature on the tennis calendar.
The next tournament is the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry Championship, tentatively scheduled for July.
