Deportee tells court it was ‘foolish’ to conceal cocaine in storybooks – gets three years imprisonment, fined $30,000

A MAN, who concealed 100 grammes of cocaine in ‘Hannah Montana’ storybooks, pretending to send for his daughter in the United States of America (USA) was yesterday sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined $30,000.

altDellon Mc David, 28, of Lot 148 Back Street Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared before Magistrate Leron Daley. Particulars of the offence stated that on December 19, at The Guyana Post Office Cooperation (GPOC) he trafficked in 100 grammes of cocaine.
Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) Special Prosecutor Mr. Oswald Massiah, prosecuting, informed the court that the defendant is a deportee and he lived in the US for 14 years. He noted that the defendant was deported to Guyana after he served time in the US prison for drug trafficking.
Massiah said on the day in question officers from CANU received certain information and carried out a search on a box the defendant was attempting to ‘post’ to his daughter. He said in the box cards and storybooks were found and the cocaine was found in the covering of the storybooks.
The prosecutor said when the defendant was arrested he gave (CANU) officers a caution statement. He said in that caution statement the defendant admitted that he bought the cocaine and was ‘trying ah lil thing’ because he is struggling to keep up.
The defendant begged the court to be lenient with him since it was a foolish act.
