Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Brigadier David Granger on Monday presented a bursary award to Jeanelle Fredricks of Potarinau Village in the Rupununi region. The soft-spoken Jeanelle Fredricks is one of the hinterland students who excelled at the 2012 National Grade Six Assessment, winning for herself a place at the St. Joseph’s High School in Georgetown.
The PNCR Leader explained that the bursary awards were distributed under the auspices of the Burnham Education Scholarship Trust (BEST). One bursary award was presented to one student from each of the country’s ten administrative regions, as part of the PNCR’s celebration of its 55th anniversary this year.
Brigadier Granger told the awardee that education is the key to employment, empowerment, and self-esteem. The BEST and its bursary awards scheme are examples of the party’s commitment to education. BEST’s mission is to encourage excellence in education, and to assist young people to serve and develop Guyana. BEST, therefore, is not a ‘one shot’ event, but a long-term relationship.
The BEST Committee of Management is committed to monitor awardees’ progress throughout their secondary education. Granger said the aim of BEST is to assist, guide and monitor students until they graduate from university.
