9th RHTYSC/BUSTA ‘Champion of Champions : Crandon, Hicks and Pereira shine as RHTGG blast PM away

THANKS to some pugnacious batting from Royston Crandon and Delbert Hicks, and incisive bowling from national Under-19 skipper Shawn Pereira, hosts Rose Hall Town Gizmos and Gadgets (RHTGG) were able to blast Karibee Rice Port Mourant out of this year’s Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club ninth annual Busta ‘Champion of Champions’ tournament at the Area ‘H’ ground yesterday. Asked to take first strike in hazy conditions after losing the toss, the home team got a comfortable opening partnership that was worth 51 valuable runs from former Under-19 batsmen Renwick Batson 26 (1×4, 1×6) and Dominic Rikhi 25 ((1×4), before they reached 304 for 9 from their 50 overs.
In reply, Karibee Rice Port Mourant struggled against the leg-spin of Pereira who snared 6 for 40 and were bowled out for 185 inside 40 overs, handing their opponents victory by 119 runs and a place in the semifinals.
Former Albion Cricket Club player Harrinarine Chattergoon had Rikhi lbw to separate the openers, while the home team also lost Jason Sinclair (7) and Batson to be 69 for 3, before Crandon was joined by Rajiv Ivan (30, 2×4), with whom he added 76 for the fourth wicket.
When Ivan was stumped off Zaman Khan at 145 for 4, Crandon who stuck seven sixes and four fours in his 79 and Hicks who made 64 with five sixes and the same number of fours, added an even 100 for the fifth wicket pushing the score to 245.
So belligerent were the pair with their batting attitude that Hicks scored 32 runs off a Devendra Thakurdeen’s over, hitting four sixes and two fours, before he lost Crandon who was caught on the midwicket boundary off Chattergoon.
Yogindra Harrinarine removed Hicks via  lbw, but some lusty hitting from Clinton Pestano who struck four fours and two sixes in his 34, piloted RHTGG to their eventual total against the bowling of Thakurdeen who took 3 for 65, along with Khan and Chattergoon with two wickets each for 45 and 56 runs respectively.
When the opposing side began their reply, Chattergoon and Tony McKenzie gave them a positive start by adding 86 for the first wicket, with the former who top-scored with 51 that included five fours, hitting Batson for his lone six as well.
McKenzie also struck Pereira and Eon Hooper for a six each, but when they were separated, the flood gates opened as no other batsman, apart from Joshua Ramsammy who made 18, offered any resistance to Pereira who received support from Shailendra Shameer 2 for 12 and Crandon 2 for 25.
