THIS year’s Digicel Golf Classic which is being held for the fourth successive year was last Wednesday launched at the telecommunications service provider’s Barrack Street, Kingston head office, where secretary of the Lusignan Golf Course (LGC) David Mohammed said overseas participation is guaranteed. “While we have received confirmation from golfers in Canada and the United States of America, with regard to their participation in this year’s Digicel Golf Classic, no confirmation has been received from Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname up to this point,” said Mohammed.
Mohammed told the media, Digicel’s Events and Sponsorship Manager Gavin Hope, Public Relations Officer Shonnet Moore and other special invitees, golfers from these two countries are business-oriented individuals and would have to wait until the competition date draws nearer, to confirm their participation in the tournament which tees off next Sunday.
He said the involvement of Digicel over the last four years has resulted in the growth and further development of golf in Guyana.
“I would like to say thanks to Digicel for continuously being one of our major supporters to golf, for as many of you know, golf is up and coming in Guyana and Digicel is partially responsible for that with their continuous support. Without their support, we would not be able to have the exposure we are having now.
“The Classic is one of our major tournaments for the year and Digicel usually presents the ‘Red Jacket’ to the winner of this tournament, which players of the LGC look forward to competing in, with the turnout being high at this time of the year,” said Mohammed.
In confirming Mohammed’s statement, LGC member Joann Deo said the tournament which is played one week before the Guyana Open Golf Championships, usually has foreign golfers coming to these shores and teeing off in preparation for the Guyana Open.
Another member of the LGC, Alfred Mentore, who, like Deo and Mohammed competes in several tournaments at the East Coast Demerara-based course, said Digicel’s input into sports in Guyana has been tremendous, adding that the Classic really gives the players a feel of the course before the Guyana Open.
In his remarks, Hope said his company always strives to be the best at whatever it does and has been seeing the rewards, following its partnership with the LGC, hence there was no hesitation in doing it for another year.
“Over the last four years, you would have seen a lot of stars being born, a lot of young people getting involved and we will continue to support it, because we always say we are here for development of any sport and any activity that is going to be fruitful and constructive.
He said over the years, the standard of the sport has lifted tremendously and while he outlined his company’s pleasure at being associated with such development, called on the executives of the LGC to continue the hard work, while he looks forward to the expansion of the sport annually.
Local golfers, Mentore, Deo, Christine Sukhram, Troy Cadogan, Colin Ming, Clifford Reis, Kishun Bacchus, LGC’s president Jerome Khan, Avenash Persaud, Patrick Prashad and many others will do battle in this year’s tournament.
