THE Mayor and City Council (M&CC) is appealing to property owners to honour their civic obligations to the municipality, in accordance with the Municipal and District Councils Act 28:01, Part (5) of (211).
A release from City Hall yesterday said, when property owners honour their obligations, it helps the municipality to execute critical works, including drainage, garbage collection and provision of day care services.
The Council has distributed demand notices in the wards of Kingston, North Cummingsburg and South Cummingsburg.
During the course of the week, others will be delivered in Lacytown, Newtown, Robbstown, Stabroek, Werk-en-Rust, Charlestown, Bel Air Park, Prashad Nagar and Lamaha Gardens.
The Municipal and District Councils Act Part (vi) 211(4) and 216 (5) states that the demand notice shall contain the description of the property in respect of which the demand is made, the assessed value of the property, the rate percentage, the rating period, the date for which installments are due, the office or place at which the amount is to be paid, reference to interest chargeable and to discount attained.
Part 211 (vi) 5 states that, where property owners cannot be found, the person in occupation of that property, or where there are two or more persons in occupation, any one person shall be designated as owner by the Council.
The records at City Hall revealed that there are property owners, who have not paid taxes for four years and this has seriously inhibited the Council’s ability to execute critical works in various wards, the release said.
It added that the municipality wishes to remind all property owners that there is a debt recovery unit, located in the City Treasurer’s Department and those property owners, who are experiencing financial difficulties, can visit there, where a contractual arrangement can be worked out to facilitate payments of property taxes.
