US-based charity to make more inroads into interior locations

GUYANA Medical Relief Inc., (GMR Inc) the charitable organisation comprising Guyanese living in North America, has shipped over US$1.1M in drugs and medical supplies to hospitals in Guyana over the past six months. Chief Operating Officer of the GMR Inc., Mr. Sharir Chan, disclosed that a shipment was sent to the Bartica Hospital in February; air shipments were sent to Bartica and Mahaicony hospitals in April; and to Linden in May, as the charitable organisation continued its good work in its 28th year of existence.
Chan disclosed that a container filled with medications and medicine is due for Suddie Hospital in a month’s time, and another is currently being packed for a yet-to-be-determined hospital.
“We hope to be able to make more inroads into the interior hospitals, such as in Mahdia, in Region 8(Potaro/Siparuni) and Lethem (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo),” he said.
He disclosed that the GMR is also working closely with an organisation out of Atlanta called Deskan, supplying members with medications through its partner, Direct Relief International (DRI), destined for their outreaches in Lethem, Region 9 (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo) next week.
Guyana Medical Relief (GMR) Inc., based in Los Angeles, California, was formed in 1984 by a small group of concerned Guyanese, to provide sponsorship for urgently needed medical supplies and equipment to Guyana, for use by both public and private hospitals.
GMR Inc. collaborates with, and gets supplies from, Direct Relief International (DRI), a California-based agency with experience in providing worldwide medical assistance for over 57 years.
Chan said that GMR Inc. has, over the past twenty-seven years of its existence, moved from being an organisation which supplied medicines and medications to Guyanese health services to becoming one supplementing the infrastructural needs of those institutions.
