THE Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) is now engaging President Donald Ramotar in discussions relating to the fulfillment of some impending aspects of the incentive package sealed between the GTU and the Guyana Government. The union, led by President Colin Bynoe, met the Head of State at his office Monday for the first time since he became President in December last year, and updated him on the status of the accord.
Bynoe, in a comment to the Government Information Agency (GINA), said the President is aware of many aspects of the deal, having been briefed by the proactive new Minster of Education, Priya Manickchand.
The agreement, which was sealed after a long period of negotiations between the two sides, caters for, among other things, a wage increase, a housing revolving fund, and scholarships.
The group conveyed to President Ramotar their willingness to work along with him and also used the occasion to invite the Head of State to attend the union’s annual conference on April 10 in New Amsterdam, Berbice, Region 6.
Bynoe said the conference will feature a packed agenda, including reviews and motions proposed by the various GTU branches and brainstorming of ideas for greater benefits and working conditions for teachers.
Chief among the proposals is working in partnership with the Ministry of Education in the interest of delivering quality education to students. The four-day conference will include delegates from across the country.
