— owner allegedly never exercised control over animals
TWO men, a damaged minibus and the carcass of a cow are in police custody following an accident on the Bel Air Public Road, Greater Georgetown, at approximately 12:30 hrs on Thursday. Eshwar Samaroo, driver of minibus BNN 7421, said he was ferrying an almost full load of passengers in the direction of Georgetown when the cow suddenly ran across the road in front of his vehicle. He was too late in applying brakes, and the bus hit the animal with massive force.
Only the occupant of the front passenger seat sustained injuries, minor at that. The animal died approximately two minutes after it was hit.
Witnesses claim that a herd of cattle was grazing on the road when one cow that was in the front made a sudden run across the road, directly in front of the minibus.
The owner of the animals, who lives not far from the scene, was not at home at the time of the accident. Upon returning home, he and Samaroo were taken to the police station for further questioning. The carcass of the cow and the minibus were also taken to the police station as the police investigated the accident.
A woman who prefers to remain anonymous was present at the scene of the accident. She stated that she lives within reasonable proximity to the owner of the animals, and has always warned the owner of the cows that letting the animals wander out to the public road would prove fatal one day.
She said many persons had complained to the man about the feral disposition of the animals, and how they had to run down the road screaming until they were safely out of the animals’ reach; but the man never took those complaints seriously. Her granddaughter, she said, was attacked by one of the animals.
Regrettably, she said, the man still gives the animals free rein on the streets and roadways, even after receiving all those complaints.
