TORONTO, Canada (CMC) – Canada inflicted a brutal beating on the Cayman Islands, winning by 391 runs, while Bermuda thrashed Argentina in Friday’s other game in the five-nation ICC Americas Region qualifiers for next year’s Under-19 World Cup.
Ashtan Deosammy and Eshan Sensarma both struck centuries as Canada piled up a mammoth 441 for five in their 50 overs at King City’s Maple Leaf North-West Ground before bundling out their opponents for 50.
Bermuda also dismissed Argentina for 50 after posting 201 for nine at the Maple Leaf North-East Ground to earn their second victory of the tournament, following a seven-wicket win over Cayman the previous day.
Canada and the United States are both unbeaten and the winners of yesterday’s showdown between the two will earn a place in next year’s Under-19 World Cup in South Africa.
Cayman and Argentina, who have lost all three of their games so far, will have the chance to salvage some pride when they face each other in Saturday’s other game to close out the tournament.
Opener Sensarma and Deosammy, the captain, put the Cayman attack to the sword with a fourth-wicket stand of 138.
Sensarma struck eight fours in his 112-ball 105 while Deosammy was more explosive, smashing nine sixes and 12 fours in his unbeaten 155 from 104 balls.
Gabriel Harrington-Meyers, a 13-year-old leg-break bowler, was the most economical of the Cayman attack, picking up two for 76 in 10 overs.
Like Argentina, in Friday’s other game, not a single Cayman batsman reached double figures with 25 extras accounting for half their total as Deosammy, an off-break bowler, and Raqib Shamsudeen each picked up three cheap wickets.
