The Environmental Community Health Organization (ECHO) is pushing ahead with its green education programme in schools and the wider community. Education is a clear prerequisite to change the current negative attitude and actions towards the environment. At the moment, Echo has more than forty (40) echo-clubs in schools in different regions and three (3) community development groups in Georgetown. These are used as conduits through which information is disseminated to empower young people in Guyana. A major aspect of this thrust is the construction of eco- learning centres in Georgetown, Regions 3 and 10. These facilities would provide space for residents of different local communities to meet, talk and take action on certain environmental issues including garbage collection and solid waste management, and the conservation of environmental resources. These centres would be used for training and other activities and events aimed at protecting and preserving the natural environment.
To this end, we have written the Ministry of Housing for appropriate lands to begin this project. Echo is hoping that the competent authority would assist this effort to encourage and facilitate discussions and collective community action on current and emerging environmental issues including climate change, conservation of trees, and other ecological features and garbage control. Echo is hoping that it would be able to begin this initiative in June 2012.
