HAVING been replaced by former national middle-order batsman Mark Harper earlier this year as coach of the Guyana national team, former national middle-order batsman Ravindranauth Seeram has returned to that position for the Amazon Conquerors. The 14-man squad, which will be led by West Indies T20 all-rounder Christopher Barnwell, was selected last Sunday following the completion of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Carib Beer/Pepsi T20 tournament, to contest the West Indies Cricket Board Calypso Cup T20 tournament which bowls off in Antigua on January 9.
According to a GCB press release, the role of coach would be selected on a tour-by-tour basis, while they thanked Mark Harper for the work he has done with the team in previous tournaments.
Seeram had taken over from Albert Smith who was the head coach when Guyana won the 2006 Stanford 20/20 tournament, before losing out to Jamaica in the semifinals of the said tournament two years later, midway through the 2009 season.
He led Guyana to the inaugural CT20 championship title last year in Trinidad and Tobago, which also saw the Amazon Conquerors going on to compete in the Airtel Champions League in South Africa a few months later, where they lost all four matches.
President of the West Berbice Cricket Association, David Black, has retained the position of manager with the team, while Everest Cricket Club’s David Harper has been named assistant coach to Seeram.
GCB’s Cricket Operations Officer Robin Singh will provide technical (video analysis) and logistical support to Seeram and David Harper and along with Barnwell and his deputy Veerasammy Permaul, will constitute the on-tour management team.
According to the GCB, David Harper recently returned from England where he worked and qualified as a Level Two coach and coached the Gizmos and Gadgets-sponsored Georgetown Pitbulls in the recent GCB T20 tournament, where they lost to the GCB’s President XI in the final, via the Super Over rule.
The GCB intends to provide all material and logistical support for the Amazon Conquerors as they seek to repeat their historic feat and bring glory, joy and unity to all Guyanese people everywhere through the game of cricket.
The full touring squad reads: Trevon Griffith, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine, Leon Johnson, Christopher Barnwell, Royston Crandon, Derwin Christian, Steven Jacobs, Veerasammy Permaul, Devendra Bishoo, Dillon Heyliger, Rajiv Ivan and Ronsford Beaton.
