PEOPLE in Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam) were going about their business as usual yesterday, as they wait on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to announce the official results of Monday’s voting. Reports said all schools across the region were in session and the children were attending classes, while shops, supermarkets and the three markets at Charity, Anna Regina and Suddie were open and doing business.
Rice farmers and other crops planters were also busy tending their fields and farms, all awaiting the delivery of the results of the 2011 general and regional elections.
The atmosphere across the region was one of calm and peace as Essequibians met and talked with each other about their opinions of the voting.
Many young people who voted for the first time, said they were looking forward to hearing the outcome soon, because they wanted to know who would be the next President.
Asked to comment on the slow pace of GECOM’s delivery of the results, the youths declared they were not pleased.
According to them, the results should have been officially announced the next day after the balloting, as the voting population is less than 500,000.
One young woman, who also voted on Monday for the first time, remarked that St. Lucia had an election the same day like Guyana and everyone knew the results the following day. “Why can’t Guyana be like that?” she questioned.
There is no reported tension among residents, and the joy of the Christmas spirit seems to be picking up quickly in the market areas on Essequibo Coast, as Essequibians move into the festive season, shopping for new curtains and flowers for their homes.
One housewife, Jenny (only name stated), who was in the market to shop, said the elections have come and gone and now is the time for Christmas celebrations.
“I am happy with the party that wins the elections, and may God bless the new President,” she declared.
Essequibo is known for its peace, quietness and love, and Essequibians are showing the rest of the country that those virtues will prevail in spite of who wins.
