Back in the days, even toilet paper was a luxury

A LOT of missiles and projectiles are being thrown at the PPP/C. The Georgetown Hospital should set aside a sizeable ward to treat people with Amnesia. I have been a cane cutter since I was 13 years old. We had to go to the Regional Chairman for a signed document (licence) then go to GNTC to purchase one cutlass and file.
A cane cutter had to cut one ton of cane (wages) to buy one pound of banned flour. We had to hide and eat roti, otherwise it was jail without bail.
Under the PNC’s 28 years, every imported food item was scarce or not available at all. Even cooking salt was being black-marketed openly on the Water Street pavement.
Goods that were not banned were sold only to PNC card members on wholesale and then black-marketed to vendors. There were no shops or supermarkets. The PNC had ships called Knowledge Sharing Institute (KSI) which were only located in Afro-Guyanese areas.
The shelves were mostly filled with cobwebs and dust. Whenever luxury goods (eg. Salt, oil, butter, soap power,  etc) came in, we had to line up a whole day for one pound butter, one pint cooking oil, etc. Even toilet paper was a luxury back in those days.
Most people made use of newspaper or a bottle of water. Even rice was scarce and it was illegal to travel with more than one bag of rice.
The PNC imported sugar in Guyana. They had closed down very productive estates such as Leonora, Versailles and Diamond.
There were no new bicycles coming into Guyana, much less vehicles. In those days you could only talk about Burnham in guarded whispers while nowadays, every Tom, Dick and Harry can talk lies and half-truths at the top of their voices. All the ‘Christmas parties’ are spewing venom at 19 years. People who live in glass houses should not throw stones. Here are some mammoth PNC accomplishments:

1. Glass factory at Timehri
2. Cassava factor at Parika
3. Cheese factory at Parfaite Harmonie
4. Power barge
When Burnham travelled, it was like a high-profile military operation. A mile of entourage (barriaat) preceded him.
Finally, empty vessels always make the most noise. A bully always has a long story. Lawyers always twist the facts to win on a technicality. They love to be morally wrong but politically right. Suddenly, all the old devils in Guyana have become modern-day saints.
