Carbon copy wins for Riddim Squad, Rangers
CARBON copy was the way to describe the opening night of the second annual Turbo Knockout Football tournament on Monday at the Ministry of Education ground on Carifesta Avenue.
Northern Rangers and Riddim Squad were the first two teams that booked their spots in the quarterfinals of the 16-team knockout tournament.
In the feature match of the night, Northern Rangers had a comfortable win over Western Tigers with Steven Sankar firing the victors ahead in the 11th minute of the clash with a composed finish, before Adolph George completed a brace in the 30th and 69th minutes.
Western Tigers would have felt that they had a good chance after Joshua Britton had netted to pull their deficit to one goal with almost half of the game to go in the 47th minute but the Ruimveldt-based team were completely outplayed.
Meanwhile, in the opening game, Riddim Squad’s Kevin Agard banged in a hat-trick to ensure the Mocha Arcadia-based team pulled off a come-from-behind win against Pele Football Club, who went ahead first through Abosi Jarvis in the 20th minute.
All of Agard’s goals came from set pieces with him curling the last past Pele’s custodian to take the score to 3-1.
Round-of-16 matches continue tonight with two games from 18:30hrs. In the first match, Santos will match skills with Buxton United while the feature match, which will kick off at 20:30hrs will be an engagement between Police Football Club and Beacon.
The winners of the competition will pocket $800 000, second place $400 000, third $200 000 and fourth $100 000.
