LA NINA RETURNS
– Hydromet Office predicts La Nina conditions to gradually strengthen
THE Ministry of Agriculture’s Hydrometeor-logical Service says that, during the next 72 hrs, mostly cloudy conditions can be expected with occasional thundershowers, with the possibility of rainfall exceeding 25 mm on each day, mostly along coastal and near inland locations. In a release, the Hydromet Service said there is a series of tropical waves expected to propagate over Guyana and influence the weather.
“La Niña conditions have returned and are expected to gradually strengthen and continue into the early part of 2012,” the release said.
Therefore, Guyana should expect more days with rainfall above long-term average in the coming months.
Over the last 48 hrs, Guyana’s weather has been influenced by the presence of a surface low which was positioned over the West of Guyana and over Venezuela.
The agency said, too, that due to the south westerly wind pattern over Guyana at the surface and strong upper level divergence, environmental conditions became favourable for intermittent rain and outbursts of thunder.
“The Hydro meteorological Service, as at 8:00 hrs on October 19, 2011 received reports from a number of its rainfall stations across the country. The records indicate that the highest rainfall over 24-hr period (8:00 hrs on October 17 to 8:00 hrs on October 18, 2011) was at Naamryck in Region Three, with 79.0 mm (3.1 inches), 64.9 mm (2.5 inches) which occurred at Vryheid’s Lust, Region Four, was the second highest amount of rainfall recorded, followed by the 60.2 mm (2.4 inches) at Uitvlugt, Region Three,” the release said.
