– Kumar upbeat about chances of recapturing IGG Title
A delegation of 155 athletes and officials departed Guyana today bound for Suriname where they will represent the Land of Many Waters at this year’s Inter Guiana Games from October 20 – 23.
The Dutch speaking nation will host Guyana and French Guiana as the three countries battle in the disciplines of chess, football (male and female), basketball (male), cycling (male and female), swimming and athletics.
Speaking with Chronicle Sport yesterday, prior to the team’s departure, Director of Sports Neil Kumar expressed his satisfaction, and how impressed he was with the putting together of the teams for the various disciplines.
“I think this is one of our better teams as compared to the last one. I think that the people in charge really did a good job with the teams,” declared Kumar.
The long standing sports director admitted to his words being a bit cliché, but nonetheless singled out Chris Bowman and Lugard Mohan for their work done with the male basketball team along with female team coach Robert ‘Bobby’ Cadogan and male football team coach Gordon ‘Ultimate Warrior’ Brathwaite for what he’s calling a “job well done in preparing championship caliber teams”.
“We also have athletics and I also must say that Mr. Colin Boyce and the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) did a great job because I know that we have to win back that Athletics trophy that we lost to Suriname in French Guyana last year,” explained Kumar.
Basketball, football and athletics were the three sports that were singled out as very important for Guyana’s chances of dethroning arch rivals Suriname.
At the 2010 first leg in French Guiana, Suriname upstaged Guyana in the track and field; an area in which the Guyanese has had a strong hold for several years.
“I know the other disciplines will do well, but basketball (male), football and athletics are the three disciplines we need to win. Swimming will do their best, chess, cycling also do well, but those three sports need to be a must win for us if we are to beat Suriname and even French Guiana because they too have been working hard over the years to really compete,” Kumar noted.
The Andre Kampervene Stadium will host the Athletics and Football Matches, while Basketball will be played at the Anthony Nestly Stadium and swimming at the Parima Pool.
