A POLICEMAN was one of two defendants charged yesterday for causing the death of the same victim.
Twenty-five-years old police constable Rodrick Mc Donald (no address given) and Edward Hopkinson, 82, of Lot 467 Hopkinson Street, Republic Park, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and both pleaded not guilty to separate charges.
It was alleged that octogenarian Hopkinson, on August 31, at Princes and Smyth Streets, Georgetown drove motor pick-up PFF 8888 in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the death of Elian Harris.
The allegation against McDonald accused him of committing the same offence while driving motor pick-up PJJ 3478.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said the tragedy occurred about 16:30 hrs as Hopkinson was proceeding East along the northern side of Princes Street and McDonald North on the western side and both defendants failed to stop.
The prosecutor said Hopkinson’s vehicle struck McDonald’s, pushing it to hit pedestrian Harris, who was taken to hospital but died.
Mc Donald and Hopkinson were each put on $100,000 bail until November 25.
