Guard Rawlestown Cummings to be sentenced Sept. 20
PRESIDING Judge at the Demerara Assizes Roxanne George yesterday directed a mixed jury at the Demerara Assizes to return formal verdicts of ‘not guilty’ of murder and ‘guilty’ of manslaughter against security guard Rawlestown Cummings for unlawfully shooting to death Lloyd Kandasammy on March 25, 2006.
The shooting had taken place outside of Church’s Chicken, where Kandasammy had an argument with folks because he was dissatisfied with certain arrangements.
It was said that Kandasammy went into the then newly opened fast food restaurant to buy chicken and became impatient and behaved disorderly. A source said that he went there about 11.30hrs and after ordering an item from the menu, he went to the collection area and not long after began behaving erratically, cursing and demanding his money back.
After he had been refunded his money, Kandasammy was escorted outside by security when a scuffle ensued. It is alleged that he got into his car and began to reverse towards the building, almost trapping one guard between his vehicle and the glass display window of the restaurant.
It was at this point that another guard pulled out a baton and tried to prevent the taxi driver from continuing his actions. The guard somehow lost control of his baton, after which he drew his gun and pointed it at Kandasammy, who was subsequently shot to death.
After Cummings changed his plea yesterday on the advice of his lawyer, Mr. Adrian Thompson, the lawyer requested a probation report in relation to the accused.
Judge George granted the request and fixed September 20 as the date for the report and sentence by the Court. Miss. Zamilla Ali and Miss Konyo Sandiford are prosecuting.
