THERE is an old Guyanese saying “Make Do”, that is, with what you have. Why our officials do not try to “make do” with what resources they have to monitor, prevent and solve the problems they encounter? A writer recently pointed out that many crimes were solved without a first-class forensic lab, although highly desirable. It seems that many believe that until they have the technical tools, advanced expertise and finances of the US or a new President most problems will be difficult to solve.
For instance, Asst. Commissioner Merai recently said that some deportees do not want to work and wait to know when people come from abroad, especially on the Corentyne, and rob them, so it’s a concern to the GPF. When will this concern be translated into action with the police using this information to trap these criminals? Has the capture of any drug courier led to the source of the drugs? Where are the proactive officials making sure we get what we pay for or making the most of available resources? Reactive is usually too late. It is not the President but too many reactive officials below him that do the most harm in the life of the average Guyanese.
