The ROCKSTONE Development Association (RDA), demonstrating its commitment to further strengthening the bonds of unity with residents of the Amerindian community, is moving to take the village beyond sport fishing.
Situated on the outskirts of Linden, in Region Ten (Upper Demerara/Upper Berbice), the place has been made popular, in recent years, through the annual hosting of the Rockstone Fish Festival, with tangible support from the Linden Economic Advancement Programme (LEAP) and the Linden Tourism Association.
But, as it moves closer to self-sufficiency, it was able to host the 2010 festival without LEAP’s assistance and, through collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and the Tourism Development Authority, has showcased Guyana’s potential for such cooking, camping, diving, swimming and boat riding on the breathtakingly beautiful Demerara River, as well.
During the Fish Festival, competitions are held and trophies and other prizes are won.
However, established some three years ago, RDA, headed by Pastor Timothy Norton of God’s Cathedral of Praise and a five-member executive, is determined to see more progress in the community.
In that thrust, RDA has embarked on empowering villagers to become self-reliant and self-sufficient by teaching them marketable skills and starting income-generating projects, with the aid of the Headmistress of the Primary School, Ms. Faye Richards.
With funding from the European Commission (EC), RDA started a poultry farm and a carambola fruit nursery and purchased a ‘Canter’ truck to provide transport to make the ventures economically viable.
Over the last two years, RDA has also hosted Christmas parties at which nursery and primary schoolchildren received toys and other goodies and the contents of several barrels of clothing and footwear were distributed to adult residents
Apart from the government nursery and primary Schools, Rockstone also boasts a modern health centre, which services the medical needs of the community and the truck is available to evacuate patients to Linden in times of emergencies.
