Unfair comments on GFC

I was surprised to see some very unfair comments made about the Forestry Commission (GFC) in your editorial of Saturday March 26, 2011. I think it is clear to all Guyanese except you, that the GFC only went public on this issue because its role was misrepresented in the press as the Agency responsible for “clearing of containers”.
The GFC then had to let the public know it had “absolutely no role in the clearing, the packing of, or even the processing of containers for export.”
Your remark of trying to implicate the GFC in “blame throwing” is surprising also, because you failed to point out the important fact that another agency first went public trying to give the public the impression that GFC was to blame when it knew fully well that the very same agency was responsible for checking and sealing of containers.
The point about Inter-Agency collaboration is good. However, I must let you know that when asked at a recent stakeholder meeting, the GFC Commissioner indicate that GFC mounted its own investigation immediately to verify that its procedure was followed, then convened a meeting of the important sister agencies recently to inform them of its findings as well as other relevant information collected.
The Commissioner also said he would not disclose the findings to the meeting as the matter was still under investigation.
This show clearly that GFC had initiative to firstly conduct an investigation immediately to see whether their procedures were followed. This it did by sending an officer directly to Jamaica to see firsthand and gather data directly from the source.
Then it showed collaboration by convening this inter agency meeting to share findings.
Important is the fact that GFC respects that it cannot go public because the matter is still being investigated and agencies are still to gather more information.
This approach shows maturity, collaboration and responsibility from the GFC.
The Chronicle should also show the same. If you had contacted the Commissioner I am sure he would have briefed you on this just as he did to the stakeholders at recent meetings.
As a forestry stakeholder, I get angry when I see this constant attack against the GFC. It is totally unfair and unprofessional to be always trying to portray GFC in a negative light when it is common knowledge this organisation is collaborating strongly with local and international stakeholders to work together for betterment of all and within the laws.
