At the National Cultural Centre tonight

Six teenagers vie for Miss St Joseph High crown
Six talented teenagers will tonight vie for the title in the Miss St. Joseph High Pageant at the National Cultural Centre.

The pageant has a long history, having been one of the events staged by the school in the days of the Sisters of Mercy. It evolved to become a yearly event up until the late 1980s. In 2003 the event was revived as a collaborative effort between the Old Students’ Association and the school. The pageant has since been staged in 2004, 2006 and 2008. It is now a biennial affair.

In the pageant, the delegates compete in preliminary sequences of introduction, casual wear, questions and answers, talent and evening gowns. The top three contestants in the preliminary round then answer a final question to determine the queen and her court.

The school points out that while physical beauty abounds at the school, it is not a consideration in the pageant. The focus is rather on the more internal qualities and abilities, such as intellect, public speaking, confidence and talent. Through the pageant, the contestants are moulded into more rounded individuals who serve as role models for their peers.

Contestants research and present topics of their interest, mostly social ills of society. This year the delegates will focus on land pollution, child sexual abuse and domestic violence.

The pageant has transformed not only the lives of the contestants but also that of their fellow students. Funds raised through the event have been utilized to enhance the delivery of education at the institution through many projects such as the establishment of a computer laboratory and renovation of the science laboratory.
