AS A resident on the East Bank of Demerara, I could not help noticing an article in the Kaieteur News dated Friday, March 4, 2011, titled “Another NDIA scandal? – $11.7M rehab of new 4ft wide sluice door and clearing of outfall”, which is not a good example of ethical journalism. As I looked at the picture on the front page, I said to myself this must be the sluice at Caledonia, but to my utmost surprise, on reading the article, it was stated that the sluice was the Coverden sluice. It is clear that the reporter had not a clue about where the location of the sluice existed, or rather chose a structure to make out a storybook tale. I am sure that while a small section of society may have been alarmed by the story, the majority would have found it to be a huge joke. How could a newspaper, the management of which acclaims to be the top newspaper in the country make such a mistake? I hope that the editor makes a full page apology to NDIA, as well as the people of Guyana for providing this misinformation.
What was even more misleading in the article was the outfall channel that was mentioned. I am a farmer and, having known some farmers from the Coverden area, I knew that there was no outfall channel to be cleared but rather a number of main canals that needed rehabilitation works. It is time that the people of this nation speak out against such articles. Let the truth prevail.
The article speaks about a scandal. However, it is not a scandal of the NDIA, but rather one of the Kaieteur News. It seems that the newspaper has some hidden agenda – this being an election year. This newspaper has long been the mouthpiece of the opposition, but how could it stoop so low this time?
I would impress upon readers to simply visit the Coverden sluice and make their own assessment.
The unethical campaign of this newspaper must end now. I would dare Mr. Glen Lall to publish an apology and save face for his newspaper, or else dismiss the people whom he trusts so much, but who is giving him incorrect information. Your credibility is on the line, Mr. Glen Lall!
