Another hundred for young Brathwaite

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, (CMC) – The 16-year-old Kraigg Brathwaite batting standout reeled off his 38th century and second in a row in the Barbados Division One Championship on Saturday.

Playing for the Jamaica-bound Barbados Youth team, Brathwaite scored 113 not out to steer his side to 239 for three against Spartan at the Lester Vaughan School Ground.

Tuning up with his team for the TCL Group West Indies Under-19 tournament starting in Jamaica next month, opening batsman Brathwaite struck 14 fours in his unfinished innings.

The two-time CLICO West Indies U15 tournament MVP, reached his hundred in 265 minutes off 207 balls.

Marradon Bend (41), Chad Proverbs (26) and Ramon Reifer (23 not out) were the next highest scorers in the Barbados Youth team’s innings.

Brathwaite, who had also scored his maiden Division One century in the third round the previous weekend, is now nearing 40 hundreds in his fledgling career, most of his triple-figure scores coming in junior cricket competitions domestic and regional.

The young right-hander was also MVP for the CLICO International Under-15 Championship which he helped West Indies win last year.

Elsewhere, Alcindo Holder, Jamal Smith, veteran Floyd Reifer, Miles Bascombe and Diego Stuart struck half-centuries.

At Bank Hall, former West Indies U19 batsman Holder, fresh from representing Merry Boys in Trinidad and Tobago’s domestic season, top scored with 83, and with Jamal Smith (57), helped the home side score 283 for seven against BCL.

Reifer (57), Vincentian Bascombe (50) and Dominican Liam Sebastien (37) helped UWI score 248 all out against BDF Sports Programme, who were 36 for two in reply at 3Ws Oval.

At Dayrells Road, former Barbados U19 all-rounder Diego Stuart scored 66 not out and big-hitting Martin Nurse 48 for Wanderers to score 273 for nine against Pickwick.
