THE Guyana Book Foundation, as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations and in observance of Education Month in September, has donated over 10,000 supplementary reading books and teachers’ resource materials to primary and secondary schools.
Eighty-five primary and eighteen secondary schools have benefitted from the locally-published, Caribbean and North American books. Schools in three regions – West Berbice (5), Cuyuni-Mazaruni (7) and Upper Demerara-Berbice (10) – were targeted to receive the books.
The Foundation’s ‘Mission Statement’ is to improve literacy among children in Guyana and this year’s donation is in keeping with that commitment. Schools are encouraged to strengthen their library holdings through this acquisition so that more children are attracted to reading outside their normal text books.
During ‘Education Month’, the Foundation also held a skills training workshop for new library assistants. They will manage their community libraries in Kamarang, Capoey Lake, Karasabai and Hotoquai.
The Guyana Book Foundation was established in 1990 as a non-governmental organisation. Together with its partners, the Foundation provides low-cost or no-cost books, reading material and other educational resources and services for the benefit of children.
