New road traffic act needs support of drivers

A few days ago I was standing at the Plaisance bus park and I overheard disgruntling remarks of a few drivers regarding the Evidence and Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic (Amendment) bill.

It’s not a surprise that many of the drivers are very displeased to say the least, but many of them also openly express disregard for the bill, which they deem a “waste of time.”

Why is it that these people fail to see that the piece of legislation was developed to reduce the occurrence of road fatalities and only seeks to serve in their favour?

When fatal road accidents occur, blame is almost always dished out on the government and the police force, when in actuality a driver who decides to drive under the influence signs his own death warrant, as well as those of innocent people.

Mr. Editor, people (drivers in particular) need to realise and understand the function of this legislation at all cost. If this does not happen the legislation and police intervention alone would not be sufficient enough to support it. And we would have defeated our very purpose. The support of drivers towards this Act is necessary; if we are going to make our highways safer.

I am appealing to drivers to adhere to the new traffic act. It’s high time that drivers who think they can evade the law realize that fighting this legislation only puts lives at risk.
