THE residents and all progressive minded people of Region 2
(Pomeroon /Supenaam) would like to appreciate the facility of your paper to offer our deepest sympathy to the relatives and friends of the late Winston Murray CCH.
Winston Murray came to Essequibo the week before he became ill and fraternalised with friends and some of his party supporters. I got to know Winton Murray in the late sixties, when I was involved in political work on the island of Leguan. He was from a family of teachers, nurses, and very good farmers. As a former Member of Parliament and a back bench spokesman for agriculture, we were always in sight to deal with issues that needed Parliament’s attention; he was a more upright parliamentarian than many of us and I did mention this to a crowd of 400 at a funeral at Affiance on Essequibo Coast; two years ago when Mr. Winston Murray was giving his tributes. In the parliament the late Dr, Cheddi Jagan will always commend Mr. Winston Murray for his principled deliberation; Mrs. Viola Burnham also received kudos from Cheddi Jagan. One memorable encounter was the period when permission was needed to purchase, cutlass, weedicides, cement etc; in that period I needed a bicycle and Minister of Trade; Minister Murray approved that request, and politely offered to give me two bicycles. At one occasion he abandoned his car at Parika stelling to give way to a sick that was to board a loaded ferry to Leguan. But there are many good people around and we should let them know by whatever means how the public thinks about them when they are alive. We can emulate his memories by adopting some of his civic track record that fits into the following verse by ‘Henry Long Fellow’.
“The lives of great mean all remind us that we can make our life sublime- and in departing leave behind us-foot prints on the sand of time”. Let us look for those foot prints.”
May his soul rest in peace!
Winston Murray was an upright parliamentarian
