Nokta exhorts citizens: look to future with optimism
COORDINATOR of Hinterland Affairs, Mr. Harripersaud Nokta, told residents of Lower and Upper Bonasika and Morashee, last Saturday, that they should look to the future with optimism.
Speaking during a community outreach across the farming communities in Region Three (West Demerara/Essequibo Islands), he said whatever happened in one country affects other countries, said a release from the Regional Administration.
Nokta, alluding to climate change and low carbon, said Guyana is no exception to those two phenomena.
He said the 2005 floods were a wake-up call for Guyana and that the Government, corporate entities and citizens, themselves, responded to the challenges that the situation presented.
Nokta observed that Guyana has had its fair share of problems and most of them have been resolved through the cooperation of citizens.
Referring to remarks by late President Desmond Hoyte, who conceded that Guyana had lost its creditworthiness and growth was stymied, the former Local Government Minister emphasised that prudent financial management of the economy has since resulted in its consistent growth.
On the subject of education, Member of Parliament (MP), Ms. Bibi Shadick explained that it is a criminal offence for parents or guardians to keep children away from school.
She criticised parents who do not send their children to school and, alluding to the promise, by President Bharrat Jagdeo, of a computer in each home, she posited that to make use of the technology, required basic education.
Consequently, Shadick exhorted parents and guardians to ensure that children attend school regularly and punctually.
Chairman of Region Three, Mr. Julius Faerber, Regional Coordinator of Agriculture, Mr. Brijesh Singh, Veterinary Officer, Dr. Praimnauth Tihul and Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) Accountant, Mr. Peter Ramcharran also took part in the outreach, the release said.
Among the concerns raised by residents surrounded the black sigatoka disease, sanitary facilities in schools and a new ramp at Lower Bonasika Primary School.
