PRESIDENT of the Guyana Squash Association David Fernandes has commended his junior team who competed at the St Vincent & The Grenadines Junior Squash Open 2016 (part of the World Squash Federation Junior Circuit Event) which was held in that country last weekend. The team, accompanied by manager Fernandes, coach Garfield Wiltshire, and chaperone Juanita Fernandes,. returned with three gold, five silver and three bronze medals
In an invited comment, the GSA boss said, “Everyone played very consistently. I was pleased with the level of commitment and determination showed by all of our players.”
He added, “We now will be preparing for the upcoming Caribbean Junior championships to be held in the Cayman Islands during the month of July and this tournament has given us the opportunity to gauge where we are and the areas, both technically and tactically, that our juniors need to work on in order to be fully ready for this tournament.”
Winning gold were Taylor Fernandes who defeated Larissa Wiltshire in the Girls Under-19 final 3-1, Makeda Harding who played unbeaten to win the Girls Under-15 round-robin event and Shomari Wiltshire, who defeated Alex Stewart (Barbados) 3-0 in the Boys Under-13 event.
The silver side of things featured Larissa Wiltshire in the Mixed Under-19 event, losing to Jason Doyle (St Vincent) in the final 3-0, Larissa Wiltshire in the Girls Under-19 event and Makeda Harding in the Girls Under-17 final losing to Thandi Myers (St Vincent) by 3-1.
Shomari Wiltshire also picked up silver in both the Boys Under-15 and 17 finals, losing to Kai Bentick (St Vincent) by 3-1 and 3-0 respectively.
The bronze medal winners were Taylor Fernandes, Mixed Under-19, and Daniel Islam, Boys Under-15 and Under-19.
