THE Old Fort men’s first division team exacted the heaviest punishment of the night on Saturday with a 12-2 trashing of Saints as the GT&T National Indoor Hockey Championships continued at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.GCC however managed to secure the top spot at the end of the pool and was down to face fourth place Pumas in the first semifinal yesterday.
The Hikers round out the men’s first division semi-final spots and was down to face Old Fort in the second semifinal.
There was no surprise in the ladies division as predictably the Tigers and Panthers achieved victories over the under-21s (2-1) and Old Fort (5-2) respectively.
The Tigers are the unbeaten pool leaders and was scheduled to face Old Fort in the first ladies semifinal yesterday, while second and third place Panthers and Hikers were to meet in the second semi-final of the ladies category.
In a closely contested men’s second division competition, Phoenix edged out GCC and Old Fort for the lead on goal difference to face fourth placed Hikers in the first semi-final.
After forty six matches of play, GCC’s Orland Semple leads the goal scorers of the men’s first division competition with 11 goals to his name. GCC’s Kevin Spencer and Jaguars’ Andrew Stewart are close in pursuit with 10 each while Pumas Aroydy Brandford has nine.
All three players have been putting in sterling performances with the youthful Branford and Stewart worthy of MVP consideration for their leadership contributions to their team.
Three GCC Tigers share the top goal scorers table with Panthers Ulrica Sutherland, each with five goals, going into the final day of play yesterday. Apart from these four outstanding players, Panthers Aliyah Gordon has been one of the most exciting players to watch with her unmatched pace and dribbling skills.
Old Fort’s Jason Clarke and Phoenix Omar Hopkinson are well ahead of the rest of the field in the men’s second division competition with seven goals each to their credit.
