THE new breed of riders are stepping in and looking to cement their names in Motor Sport and Matthew Assing is one who hopes to pick up some valuable points.
Assing, aboard his 2007 YZF R6, will make his debut at one of the biggest motor racing events of the year, the Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship’s Guyana leg, set for Sunday at the South Dakota circuit.
However, the 17-year-old is unfazed by the competition, telling Chronicle Sport, “My hopes for Sunday will be just to have fun at what I’m doing and race but at the same time be competitive and remain focused.”
“As I continue to compete in races I will learn from my mistakes and better myself and learn from experience. As far as personal goals, I am willing to push myself 100% and if that’s not good enough, I will just have to analyse what I did wrong and come better next time,” continued Assing.
Nonetheless, the youngster is optimistic about his future as an upcoming rider, telling this publication that he “only started practising one week before the races and I have improved a lot in the past couple days. Now all I have to do is clear my mind and remain focused.”
As it is, Assing is one of several youngsters expected to line up on the grid, come Sunday, and he has no doubts about his ability.
“Preparations are coming along well; still getting use to different settings and getting in a lot of seat time but I feel very confident about the bike and myself..
The 17-year-old will have to put up with namesake Matthew Vieira, Nikhil Seereeram, Elliot Vieira and Kevin Persaud; all of whom are within his age group, while the older gentlemen in Stephen Vieira and Joel Neblett are expected to be teachers in the coming days. (Stephan Sookram)
