Road lights on West Coast Demerara Correctly placed

Traffic Safety Engineer in the Works Ministry, Mr. Nigel Erskine, has advised that the installation of road lights project on the West Coast of Demerara has been completed, and that the luminaries have been correctly placed.
Erskine was responding to a recent Letter to the Editor, headlined `Street lights overkill’, in another section of the media, in which the writer
complained that having the roads awash with lights is a waste of time,  and that the lights are too close to each other and are very bright.
The installation of the road lights on the West Demerara was all part of $10.5M project undertaken by the Ministry of Public Works and Communications to improve the standard of the country’s roadways and maintain the safety of road users.
The 250 watt lights are 50 metres or 170 feet apart, and Erskine explained that a test with the  lights at 60 metres apart revealed several dark spots.

Re-emphasising the objective behind the installation of the 358 road lights along the highway,  the Works Ministry official reminded that, due to funding, attention was paid to only the populated areas.
He assured, though, that illuminative road markings which produce a high degree of reflectivity will aid motorists and others using the roadway in unlit areas after dark.
