Guyana Squash Association elects new president

ANDREW Arjoon was elected as the new president of the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) when that entity held its annual general meeting on Tuesday, at the Georgetown Club.
Along with the elections to select the new executive body of the GSA, the association’s exploits from the past year were revisited and the outgoing president Ronald Burch-Smith and the retaining treasurer Garfield Wiltshire came in for much praise for the efficacy with which they handled the association’s affairs.
Among the notable mentions of the GSA’s 2009 success stories is that of the junior team retaining the Junior Caribbean Championship title for the fifth year running.
The continuation of the GSA’s annual local tournaments as well as its continued standing on the international scene was also mentioned in the president’s report.
The GSA remained active members of the Caribbean Squash Association, the World Squash Federation and the Pan American Squash Federation and fielded teams for the following international engagements: The CASA Junior Caribbean Championships, The Senior Caribbean Championships and the Junior Pan-American Championships.
The outgoing president Burch-Smith also noted strides in the GSA’s internal affairs such as the improvement of the local coaches with much thanks to veteran coach Carl Ince who is responsible for the numerical increase of local Level I and Level II coaches.
It was also noted that construction of the public squash courts at Non Pariel, Woolford Avenue, is also a jewel in the crown of the local squash fraternity and that project is expected to be completed later this year.
The rest of the executive body consists: David Fernandes (Vice President), Vidushi Persaud (Secretary), Garfield Wiltshire (Assistant Treasurer), Ronald Burch-Smith (Assistant Secretary), Roderick Lovell (Chairperson, Clubs), Deje Dias (Chairperson, Tournaments) and Tiffany Solomon (Chairperson, Junior Affairs).
