AS thousands gathered on #63 Beach for the traditional kite-flying and family fun day, the Ministry of Tourism and the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) also hosted their annual kite-flying competition. According to the GTA, the competition saw entries for the largest, smallest and most unusual kite and the event was the highlight of activities on the beach, attracting a large crowd. The annual competition featured 14 competitors in the three categories, while a prize-giving ceremony was held to honour the winners and recognise their creations.
A total of 14 persons participated in the competition: Six represented the Smallest Kite Category, two represented the Largest Kite Category and six represented the Most Unusual Category.
Whilst visiting the popular Easter spot, President Donald Ramotar presented trophies to the winners of the Kite-Flying competition, noting that the creativity of Guyanese is unmatched. The Head of State was warmly received by beach-goers who greeted him with hugs and kisses, while others clamoured for photo opportunities
In the Smallest Kite Category, Ms. Felicity Smith was the winner with a kite measuring 0.6 cm x 0.6cm and depicting a Guyana flag. She received a trophy and an Essequibo River tour for two.
In the Largest Kite Category, Mr. Keerat Tassim was the winner with a kite measuring 325 cm. He received a trophy and a trip to Kaieteur; this may have also been the largest kite in the country. In the Most Unusual Kite Category, Ms. Nandranie Kishun was the winner with a circular kite measuring 50 cm x 50cm; she received a Night for Two at City Inn and a trophy as prize.
The GTA Director, Indranauth Haralsingh lauded the efforts of the team whose hard work made the occasion successful and thanked the patrons and participants for coming out and making the event a successful one.
He also recognised the efforts of the 63 Beach Committee and the Region 6 Administration for their efforts to ensure that this year’s activity was safe, clean and fun.
