Greaves seeking second win
CARLTON Wheelers cyclist Alonzo Greaves will be seeking his second win when the second leg of the Cheddi Jagan Memorial three-leg Cycle Road Race gets under way on Sunday. Greaves, who won the first leg which was staged in Berbice two Sundays ago, will be going all out on Sunday over in the West Demerara area to claim the top position again, but he will have some serious challenges from Christopher Holder who won the West Demerara leg last year in a time of one hour 57 minutes 23 seconds.
Holder was not a part of this year’s first leg, but is expected to participate in Sunday’s second leg.
Apart from Holder, Greaves is also expected to get keen competition from the likes of Warren McKay, Leer Nunes, Raymond Newton, Junior Niles, Enzo Matthews, Albert Philander, Daniel Ramchurjee and Marlon Morrison among others.
Holder, who was also the first junior to cross the finish line last year, is expected to retain that title since Geron Williams who finished second to Greaves in Berbice two Sundays is no longer a junior and that apart, he (Williams) is currently in Trinidad competing.
The veteran category is wide open as defending champion Kennard Lovell and the other contenders such as Linden Blackman, Ian `Dumb Boy’ Jackson and Virgil Jones among others, have not really come to form as yet.
Dexter Wilson is the defending champion in the upright category, but it is not certain if he will be a part of Sunday’s activity which is being sponsored by Sara Johanna Gardens and Friendship Mews, whose Managing Director, Fazil Ramzan, will be on hand to make the presentation of prizes to the respective winners.
When the first leg of the event was held in Berbice, Robin Persaud placed third, Philander fourth, Ramchurjee fifth and Morison sixth.
Flying Ace’s Neil Reece was the first junior to cross the finish line in the first leg this year, while Rasstaf O’Selmo was second and Nazim Jaundoo third.
Niles won the Veterans category ahead of Jones and Lovell respectively while Marlon King was the first upright cyclist to cross the finish line. Second was Davindra Bissoon and third Ravindra Rodrigues.
Marcia Dick won the Ladies category ahead of Naiomi Singh while Walter Isaacs was the first Over-60 cyclist to finish. The oldest cyclist to complete the first leg was 75-year-old Edward Williams.
Sunday’s leg will start at 09:00 h from outside the Wales Police Station, West Bank Demerara, and will proceed to Bushy Park, East Bank Essequibo, before returning for the finish at the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
However, the veterans and upright cyclists will turn back at Uitvlugt and end at the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
Meanwhile, the third and final leg of the Memorial event which is being organised by national cycle coach Hassan Mohamed will be staged on the Essequibo Coast on March 28.
