Devonshire Castle sea defence threatened

In Region Two…
THE earthen embankment at Devonshire Castle on Essequibo Coast, where two large holes have appeared, is under threat.

The foundation of the old and vulnerable concrete seawall has been seriously eroded and the openings are developing into craters because large chunks of earth are falling into the ocean daily.

The Sea Defence Department in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) has, in the past, shored up several sections of the seawall with tons of boulders but residents of Devonshire Castle are very concerned with the situation there.

One of them said the weight of the heavy boulders is causing slippage and exposing the sea defence to the ravages of the tides.

Meanwhile, Government is spending $2.85M to fix the sea defence at Zorg, construct an earthen embankment at Good Hope and another at Golden Fleece, also on the Essequibo Coast.

Over the years, Government expenditure for similar purposes has protected several villages in the ‘Cinderella County’ from flooding, with the construction of miles of ‘rip rap’ sea defence
