- hails easier travel to capital
THE Regional Administration of Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) has expressed strong support for the newly commissioned Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge, which was officially opened on October 5, 2025.
Regional Executive Officer (REO) Devanand Ramdatt highlighted the bridge’s role in facilitating smoother and faster travel for residents of Region Three, particularly for commuters heading to the capital, Georgetown.
“Region Three is expanding rapidly, and this development is part of the broader growth of Guyana’s economy,” Ramdatt said, noting that the bridge will significantly ease access for travelers from Moruka, Pomeroon-Supenaam, and Bartica.
Ramdatt praised President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s leadership, noting that the bridge demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving connectivity and regional development. “The President’s vision ensures easier access for our citizens while supporting economic growth,” he stated.
During the bridge’s opening ceremony, President Ali described the four-lane, 2.6-kilometer bridge as more than just a crossing. He emphasized that it will act as a catalyst for national growth, serving thousands of commuters by providing free, uninterrupted travel and eliminating the bottlenecks that frequently affected users of the older Demerara Harbour Bridge.
Construction of the bridge began in 2020, with a total cost of US$260 million, and was completed by China Railway Construction Corporation Limited. The new structure is expected to boost commerce, enhance regional connectivity, and support the continued development of Guyana’s infrastructure.
Region Three, already described as “an epicenter of development” in a July 2025 report, has seen billions invested in critical infrastructure and community projects, making the bridge a key component in the region’s ongoing transformation.
