—President Ali, PM Phillips commits to higher wages, better benefits, safer working conditions if re-elected
On the eve of the Joint Services casting their ballots, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) has reaffirmed its commitment to the men and women of the armed and protective forces, promising expanded benefits and improved conditions over the next five years if returned to office in the September 1 General and Regional Elections.
In a joint letter addressed to the disciplined services, President Dr Irfaan Ali and Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips stressed that the nation’s safety and security depend on their sacrifices and pledged that their service will continue to be rewarded with dignity and pride.
The government pointed to measures already implemented over the past five years, including the restoration of the one-month tax-free bonus valued at an additional $2 billion annually, higher wages, upward adjustments to the pay scale, accelerated promotions, improved working conditions, and expanded training and scholarship opportunities.
Beyond salaries and promotions, the PPP/C highlighted investments aimed at improving the lives of officers and their families, from better housing and healthcare access to expanded educational opportunities and stronger infrastructure such as modern hospitals, schools, and roads.
Looking to the next term, the governing party pledged to push even further: higher wages and salaries, greater opportunities for home ownership, expanded childcare and healthcare facilities, improved recreational spaces, and healthier working environments.
“When you have the right tools, training, and support, Guyana is safer. When your families are cared for, your service grows stronger. And when your sacrifices are honoured, the entire nation stands more secure and united,” the letter stated.
The PPP/C stressed that it has a proven track record, contrasting its delivery with what it described as mere promises from opponents.
“On Election Day, the choice is clear: only the PPP/C can keep your families, your careers, and our nation safe, stable, and strong,” the message read.
With disciplined service members heading to the polls tomorrow, the ruling party is making a direct pitch to a constituency seen as critical to national stability, urging unity and support to “move Guyana forward in unity, in strength and in prosperity.”
Approximately 10,481 officers from the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Guyana Defence Force (GDF), and Guyana Prison Service (GPS) are set to vote on Friday.
The early voting of security personnel is intended to allow them to fulfil their electoral duties without disrupting the deployment of officers to polling stations on Election Day.
