–Olympic Swimmer Aleka Persaud returns to the pool with a splash
THE country’s top female swimmer, two-time Olympian Aleka Persaud made a solid return to the water on Sunday.
She broke the country’s national record in the 100-meter Butterfly on her way to a gold medal at the Barbados Invitational clubs meet which concluded yesterday.
Persaud was part of a five-member team from Orca, Sea Otters and Linden’s Torpedo swim clubs that ventured to the Land of the Flying Fish for the meet.
She went into the meet with a record of 1 minute 05.70 seconds, which she reduced to a new national record of 1 minute 04.93 seconds.
She also picked up a bronze medal in the 50-meters freestyle.
The other swimmers were Jessica Sookram and Josiah Andrews from Orca Swim Club, along with Shareefah Lewis of Sea Otters, and Fitzroy Thom from Torpedo.
Sookram finished in 11th place in the 50 meters back-stroke for girls 13-14.
Lewis finished within the top 8 of all her events, but no other swimmer took medal for their club and country from the meet.
