— Dr Vindhya Persaud urges pride, unity and youth education on ancestors’ legacy

IN a celebration of heritage, unity and cultural pride, the Essequibo Praant of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha (GHDS), on Saturday afternoon, hosted a vibrant Arrival Day event at the Anna Regina Car Park, Region Two.
The occasion was graced by the presence of Minister of Human Services and Social Security and President of Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabba, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, who paid tribute to the strength and sacrifices of Guyana’s Indian ancestors.

Celebrating 187 years since the arrival of East Indians to Guyana, Dr. Persaud reflected on their legacy: “The ships brought our Indian ancestors to the shores of Guyana. They brought with them fearlessness that helped them to fight colonialism.”
She expressed admiration for the cultural exhibition at the event, which depicted the life, struggles, and traditions of the early Indian community.
“I am very impressed with the exhibition, which expressed and displayed the history of the ancestors,” she said.

Dr. Persaud emphasised the importance of educating the younger generation about their roots. “We must ensure that young people are aware of this history, so that when they embark on their own path in life, they do so beaming with pride.”
Calling for continued unity and courage, Dr. Persaud encouraged residents to uphold the values of respect and solidarity. “Hindus need to speak up—that is what our ancestors did as they struggled. Even though they endured hardship, they became someone in society.”
She further added, “As we celebrate 187 years of Indian Arrival Day, we must have pride and protect our heritage. As we observe this day, make sure you honour the contributions that the ancestors made in diverse ways to your region and sectors that contribute to development. Everyone’s voice matters.”

I am happy to see the preservation and how history came alive through this exhibition,” she stated.

The event featured a rich cultural display, including an exhibition on traditional Indian marriages, historical photographs, utensils brought by the Indian settlers, books, and authentic Indian cuisine.
Guests were treated to the iconic seven curries and other delicacies, while the rhythmic sounds of live tassa music created an atmosphere of celebration and pride. Residents also enjoyed a rich cultural programme done by local artistes.
