AS part of the government’s drive to significantly expand healthcare access and services across the country, the new Diamond Regional Hospital inches closer to opening its doors, with finishing touches currently being applied to the facility.
This is according to the Minister of Health, Frank Anthony, who recently shared updates on the hospital’s construction — a project which forms part of a wider initiative to build six regional hospitals across Guyana.

During his most recent site visit, photographs shared publicly showed workers applying final finishes to the facility. Several pieces of critical equipment have already been installed.
The Minister stated in a post to his Facebook page, “This modern facility, expected to be commissioned shortly, will significantly expand healthcare access and services for communities along the East Bank of Demerara corridor.”

At that time, he noted that once operational, the Diamond Regional Hospital would help ease the burden on the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) by bringing quality, accessible healthcare closer to residents in outlying communities.
In addition, the Ministry of Health has been recruiting non-clinical staff from nearby communities to support operations at the new hospital.

The Diamond facility is being constructed under a partnership with China’s Sinopharm International and forms part of a broader $37.2 billion initiative aimed at modernising Guyana’s regional healthcare system.

The six facilities being constructed are at Anna Regina, Region Two; De Kinderen, Region Three; Diamond and Enmore, Region Four; Bath, Region Five and Skeldon, Region Six. All of these facilities are expected to be commissioned within the second and third quarters this year.
All are expected to be outfitted with 24-hour accident and emergency, 24-hour labs, a suite of imaging services including ultrasound, digital x-ray and CT scans, along with operating theatres and more.
