SHAIMA Muna, a 27-year-old radio host and singer from Charlestown, Georgetown, was arrested by the police on Friday morning after being found with 14,515 grammes of cannabis at a roadblock on the Weldaad Public Road, West Coast Berbice.
Muna has since been charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking under Section 5(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Chapter 10:10.
The arrest occurred during a routine “stop-and-search” operation conducted by ranks from the Weldaad Police Station around 05:47hrs.

Muna, the sole occupant of a motor car bearing registration number PAB 6190, was stopped while heading toward Georgetown. Police officers became suspicious through her nervous behaviour and the strong smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
A search of the car’s trunk revealed two travelling bags—one red and one blue—containing parcels of marijuana wrapped in transparent plastic.

The cannabis was later weighed, amounting to a total of 14kg 515 grammes. Muna was informed of the offence and admitted ownership of the narcotics, explaining that her mother was in the hospital and she had taken the risk to help cover her medical expenses.
Muna was taken into custody and appeared at the Weldaad Magistrate’s Court later that same day before Magistrate R. Mohabir. She pleaded guilty to the charge and was remanded to prison until October 4th, 2024, pending a probation report.
Police investigations are ongoing as the case progresses.
