MARURANAU Village in Region Nine has reached a significant milestone with the inauguration of a new educational building, which will serve students from Maruranau, Shea, and Awarewanau villages.
This event marks a historic moment for the community, as it proudly opened its first secondary school department and conducted an orientation session, representing a significant advancement in the educational landscape of the Deep South Rupununi region.
According to the Office of the Regional Executive Officer, Region Nine, this new facility, which commenced its orientation and enrollment activities this week, will act as a vital educational hub for the region. The building will provide secondary education to approximately 180 students from Maruranau and neighboring villages, Shea and Awarewanau.

The establishment of this secondary department is a testament to the collaborative efforts of local leaders, educators, and community members, who have long recognised the importance of accessible education in the hinterland regions. The new department will offer a variety of subjects aligned with the national curriculum, ensuring that students receive a comprehensive educational foundation.
Minister of Education Priya Manickchand recently highlighted the ministry’s commitment to ensuring that every child, from nursery to secondary school, has access to educational facilities throughout Guyana. She noted that 26 new secondary schools are currently under construction across the country, in addition to the expansion of several new primary and nursery schools in underserved areas. This initiative aims to bolster educational opportunities and improve infrastructure, particularly in remote regions like the Rupununi.
The inauguration of the new secondary department in Maruranau marks a significant step forward for the community, reflecting the broader efforts of the government and local stakeholders to enhance education and empower future generations in Guyana’s hinterland areas.
