Flash back: Volleyball action in the One Guyana President Cup Games

GLAMORGAN and Karasu Volleyball clubs from Trinidad and Tobago will join teams from Guyana from August 24-26 in a one-off goodwill tournament hosted by the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) at the National Gymnasium.
The clubs will battle in four categories and feature Glamorgan volleyball club in the U-15 girls, U-19 girls and senior men’s category.
While Karasu volleyball club will compete in the U-15 and Under 19 girl’s categories.

GVF President John Flores says that competition will provide a good platform for players who have been playing in their league and training to showcase their skills.
“We are trying to bring out some people from Berbice, Kwakwani among other places for the tournament just to give everybody a chance to play,” added Flores.
He says that the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) this year will only field a beach volleyball team made up of two male and two females.

Therefore, many of the players that have been in training will miss out hence this is a great fillip for them to perform against tough competition.
“We have U-19’s who have been preparing all the time, because they were preparing for inter Guiana games, the seniors they are eager, they have been playing all the time, it’s just the U-15 we had some challenges but we have an academy set up, so we do have a U15 squad ready,” the GVF boss said.
Former player turned Marketing consultant Kristoff Shepherd says that this competition will have a heavy female focus.

“We are trying to build partnerships, so last year when we had the Road To Recovery 2, we had teams from Trinidad, Cayenne and Suriname in Guyana, so we built a partnership, we are trying to sustain that partnership. This can give our athletes exposure and provide a motivation for training,” he said.
The event will see four teams playing in round robin format in each category with the team with the most points coming out on top.
Trophies and medals will be on offer and the event is sponsored exclusively by the volleyball federation.
The teams will start to arrive on Saturday and depart the following week after the competition.
The action is set to start from 14:00 hours on Saturday, Sunday and Monday next week at the National Gymnasium
