Labour Ministry investigates fatal workplace accident in Region One

THE Ministry of Labour has initiated a formal investigation into a tragic workplace accident that claimed the life of 29-year-old Horman Bumbery on August 12, 2024, at Jawbone Backdam Trail in Region One. The investigation, spearheaded by the Ministry’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department, aims to uncover the causes of the incident and provide recommendations to prevent similar accidents in the future.

According to a press release from the Labour Ministry, the accident involved a tractor driven by 35-year-old Anzel Ashby, who was accompanied by Bumbery and 31-year-old Leon Meadas. The tractor was traveling downhill when it struck a pothole, causing it to topple onto its left side. Bumbery was tragically pinned underneath the vehicle, while Ashby became trapped, and Meadas was thrown from the tractor, sustaining injuries to his left foot and ribs.

Passersby quickly rushed to the scene, providing assistance to the injured men. They were transported to the Baramita Cottage Hospital, where Bumbery was pronounced dead on arrival. Ashby was treated for his injuries and subsequently discharged.
In response to the incident, Chavez Daniels, the OSH Officer responsible for Region One, visited the site to conduct an in-depth investigation. His findings will be crucial in identifying the factors that led to the accident and in formulating strategies to prevent future occurrences.
Minister of Labour Joseph Hamilton has expressed deep concern over the frequency of workplace injuries and accidents in Guyana. He emphasised the importance of worker safety, stating that families expect their loved ones to return home safely at the end of each workday. The Minister underscored the need for rigorous safety measures, particularly as the country continues to expand its infrastructure.

Reflecting on the issue during Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Month in April 2024, Minister Hamilton remarked, “If we don’t take cognisance of safety and health, more people will die. It’s a simple equation. The more roads we build, the more infrastructure we expand. If we don’t take precautions, more people will die.”
As the investigation continues, Minister Hamilton extended his condolences to the families and individuals affected by the tragedy.
