A TRAGIC accident unfolded early Wednesday morning at the junction of Hillfoot Public Road and Hillfoot Access Road on Soesdyke Linden Highway, leaving one person dead and several others injured.
Dead is Rudolph Caines, 68, of Hillfoot village, Soesdyke/Linden highway.
The incident, which took place around 05:15 hours, involved a motor lorry bearing registration number GAG 6169, owned by Assaf Hoosein of Lot 14 North Road, Georgetown, and driven by Yogeshwar Ramnarine, aged 38, of Lot 298 Richmond Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast.
Also involved was a motor car with registration number PGG 6390, owned and driven by Rudolph Caines, aged 68, accompanied by Maxine Caines, aged 66, both residents of Hillfoot Village, Soesdyke Linden Highway.
According to initial inquiries, the motor car was heading north along the eastern side of Hillfoot Access Road. As it approached the junction with Hillfoot Public Road, the driver allegedly failed to stop and swerved into the path of the oncoming motor lorry, which was traveling west along the southern side of the road.
The collision, which occurred on the right-side centre portion of the car, resulted in significant damage to both vehicles and caused serious injuries to the occupants of the car.
Both injured occupants were promptly transported to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre for medical attention. However, Rudolph Caines was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival.
In the wake of the accident, authorities conducted a breathalyser test on the lorry driver, revealing no traces of alcohol in his system. Both vehicles were impounded for further examination by licensing and certifying officers.
The deceased’s body was conveyed to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, pending a postmortem examination.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are currently ongoing.
This unfortunate incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of road safety and vigilance while driving, especially at intersections.
